The Australian Supermarket Giant Joined the Plastic Agreement to Use all Green Plastic Packaging by 2025

Australian supermarket giants Woolworths, Coles and Aldi, along with major food manufacturers, have pledged to make all plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

Under the broader industry ANZPAC Plastics agreement, plastic packaging waste sent to landfills and into rivers and oceans will be eliminated.

Andrew and NicolaForrest's Minderoo Foundation has released a report that says 100 companies account for 90% of the world's single-use plastic production.

More than 130 million metric tons of plastic were discarded in 2019, almost all of which were burned, buried in landfills, or dumped directly into the natural environment.

Nearly 60 organisations in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific have signed the Plastics Convention, These include major supermarket chains, Amcor, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Unilever, Arnott's, Asahi, Colgate Palmolive, Mondelez, Pepsico, Unilever, Veolia, PlanetArk, KeepCup, the Australian Beverage Council and Australia The Italian TerraCycle.

The ANZPAC Plastics Convention covers the entire plastics supply chain, from supermarkets, packaging manufacturers and retailers to recycling companies, government agencies and non-profit organizations.

Under the leadership of the Australian Packaging Convention Organisation (APCO), members of the new Convention have committed to achieving four actionable goals by 2025: eliminating unnecessary and problematic plastic packaging through redesign, innovation, etc. Ensure that 100% of plastic packaging is recyclable, reusable or compostable; Increase the amount of plastic packaging currently collected and recycled by at least 25%; And ensure that new plastic packaging contains an average of 25% recycled ingredients.
